During a latest trip to Japan's capital, former American leader Trump together with Japan's recently elected Premier Sanae Takaichi exchanged friendly compliments and vowed to enhance the currently strong bilateral relations.
Donald Trump praised Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ leader and congratulated her on becoming the nation's inaugural woman prime minister. During their discussions at the capital's official venue, the former president voiced confidence that Takaichi would prove to be one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of Japan.
Takaichi, identified as a protégée of late Japanese leader Abe, praised his efforts to address international conflicts and according to sources pledged to put forward Trump for the prestigious award.
Both nations announced a series of collaborative initiatives in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, and rare earths. Japan-based firms are exploring funding of up to $400 billion in the United States.
Furthermore, Japan had previously committed $550 billion in long-term US investments, financing, and guarantees as part of an agreement to secure exemption from the former president's tariffs.
Such actions are seen as potentially reducing any future requests from the US side for Japan to boost its military expenditure. The prime minister addressed this by promising to fast-track plans to raise military budget to two percent of GDP.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Trump said to Takaichi. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he continued.
The meeting highlights the continuing significance of the US-Japan alliance and paves the way for additional collaboration on trade, defense, and foreign policy areas.
