Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials ran across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third rotation when safety workers were seen on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his damaged front wing
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track track officials can be allowed to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the FIA
"On lap three, track officials were alerted and placed on standby to access the circuit and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were rescinded and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred subsequent to that time"
